The American University of Iraq - Sulaimani English Writing Program and Language Institute (EWPLI) prepares students to function effectively in an English-only academic environment and offers continued English language support for students throughout their degree programs. The Program provides more to students than just accelerated English language training, however. While learning English, students are also exposed to Western thought and culture. Classical and modern literature is used as part of the curriculum and instruction includes stimulating discussions and debates on critical issues in culture, politics and economics. In this way students improve their cross-cultural skills development while learning English. This component of the Program also serves to initiate students into the AUI-S general education courses, through which all AUI-S students receive an American-style liberal arts education with a strong basis in the humanities. At the EWPLI, professional instructors employ advanced pedagogical methods and modern technology to prepare students for their degree programs at AUI-S. Our small classes allow each student special attention from the instructor and the meeting of his or her individual needs. The program includes instruction in speaking, listening, reading, writing, grammar, and vocabulary. In addition to general English classes, AUI-S offers special classes on focused topics, for example English in the Business Context. English Language Preparation and Conditions of Admission: The English language preparation courses, taken in an intensive mode, require 5 hours of instruction/practice writing per day/five days per week, plus homework and practice after class. These modules are offered in a 15+ week block of time (semester), followed by testing to see if a student is ready for the next level of instruction. It is the intention of the Board of Regents and Trustees (BORT) of The American University of Iraq - Sulaimani that students matriculated into its baccalaureate degree programs be able to complete their degree studies over the course of four years (typically eight semesters, plus summer semesters when applicable). In order for students to earn their degrees in a timely manner over four years, they should: 1) Achieve TOEFL 550 or its equivalent prior to admission into the University as a matriculated degree seeking student; and 2) Successfully complete each of the requisite credit courses per the approved four-year University Study Plan for each degree; and 3) Continue with the same Major and Study Plan throughout their baccalaureate degree. Students conditionally admitted into AUI-S with TOEFL scores below 550 should anticipate taking more than four years to complete their degrees because of the need to engage in English language preparation before being able to enroll full-time in the credit courses required for the completion of the degree requirements. Conditionally admitted students who do not complete the TOEFL 550 by the end of four semesters of study at AUI-S will be dropped as matriculated students from the University, but may reapply once they document that they have earned TOEFL 550. Students conditionally admitted into AUI-S with TOEFL scores below 550 will be allowed to enroll only in EWPLI, and will not be allowed to take any credit courses.
